Manipulation can hurt parent-child bonds

For Georgia parents, one of the most difficult parts of going through a divorce can be their concerns about the effect of the end of the marriage on their children. The emotional, loving bond between parent and child is one of the most important bond in a person's life, and children who are placed in the middle of a contentious high-asset divorce can suffer psychological effects that are long-lasting and undermine the importance of this relationship. Child custody issues can linger on for years after the parenting plan is in place and the settlement signed.

Jodie Sweetin to pay $2,800 in child support for daughter

Entertainers like Jodie Sweetin, the star of "Fuller House", might appear to viewers in Georgia to lead exciting lives, but they also have to follow court orders. A court has decided that Sweetin needs to pay her ex-husband $2,800 every month to support their 7-year-old daughter.

Social Security could benefit lower-earning spouses in divorce

People seeking a divorce in Georgia might need to mingle retirement planning with their financial decisions about a divorce settlement. A spouse who earned substantially less than a partner should investigate how Social Security benefits will be calculated upon reaching retirement age. People in marriages that last for at least 10 years could gain additional benefits by making a claim upon an ex-spouse's earnings.

Dentistry and divorce: Getting through divorce quickly

Nothing disrupts business more than having your mind on other matters. That's what's happening now, as your spouse seeks a divorce against you. You're a busy dentist, and there are many assets you need to protect. It's taking away from your work as you have to focus on everything going on in your personal life.

People using gig work to avoid child support

Employers in Georgia are required to report all new hires to a database designed to track parents who are under orders to pay child support. Most employers, however, are not required to report new gig workers or independent contractors. Even in states where the law requires reporting new contractors, large companies like Uber and Lyft do not always follow the rules, according to the head of the Department of Child Support Services in California.

Retirement and divorce can go hand in hand

A growing topic of concern for people over 50 in Georgia and across the United States is divorce, especially close to and after retirement. As older people lead longer lives in greater health, the divorce rate for couples over 50 years of age has grown significantly even while the overall divorce rate for Americans has declined. During the last 20 years, the rate of divorce for couples in this age range has grown continually and is now over 50 percent. With the approach of retirement and an "empty nest" as children leave the family home, one in every four couples divorces after the age of 50.
