Dentistry and divorce: Getting through divorce quickly

Nothing disrupts business more than having your mind on other matters. That's what's happening now, as your spouse seeks a divorce against you. You're a busy dentist, and there are many assets you need to protect. It's taking away from your work as you have to focus on everything going on in your personal life.

You aren't alone in this struggle. It's helpful to work with an attorney, since he or she takes the pressure off you and handles your affairs while you focus on your clients. Dentists go through divorces often, so attorneys are familiar with your needs.

Why do dentists go through divorces often?

Dentists have a higher divorce rate for a few reasons. The first is your dedication to your job. Dentists have high workloads, long hours and could see a breakdown in communication between themselves and their spouses. Avoiding divorce is possible if there's a good line of communication about finances and the current workload, but some couples don't survive the first few years of a new practice.

Another issue is the debt-to-income ratio. Initially, dentists have many bills to pay back. Student loans are high, and building a practice takes time. For this reason, many dentists don't have high incomes initially and require time to build up a client base.

Finally, remember that dentists work with many people all the time. Depending on your spouse, jealousy could become a problem. Long hours with attractive coworkers and patients could be enough to crack away at any chip in your marriage's armor.

These are a few reasons why dentists are prone to divorces. If you're going through one, let someone help you, so you can focus on what you need to do to do well at work and to survive your divorce's stresses.
