Remember these 4 healthy actions to get through your divorce

A divorce is an ordeal for anyone to endure, but that doesn't mean there isn't a light at the end of the tunnel. By keeping a few principles in mind, you can get through this difficult time with a healthy spirit and outlook.

Keep your ex at arm's length

You don't want to box your ex out entirely during your divorce. Save for extreme circumstances like an abusive relationship, keeping a narrow window of communication open is often the best idea. This is doubly true if you have children. Children experience the pain of divorce, too, and establishing a visitation routine will ease the transition into their new, two-home lives.

Think with your head, not your heart

This is an extremely emotional time, and it's easy to let your feelings get the better of you. If your ex has fired the first shot across the bow, it's a good idea to speak with an attorney. Protecting yourself at this time is one of the most important things you can do for yourself.

Confide in loved ones, not social media

Speaking of not letting your emotions get the better of you, keep your feelings off Facebook. The prospect of dragging your ex through the mud with an angry status or Instagram photo may seem like fun, but the repercussions of this can be devastating. Social media posts are being used as evidence in divorce cases more than ever. Don't lose your chance at alimony or child custody because of a bad tweet.

Give yourself time to heal

For many people, a knee-jerk reaction to a relationship ending - even a long marriage - is to find someone new. Divorces are traumatic experiences, though. You will need time to recover from the pain and anger you've built. Spend time getting to know yourself again before jumping back into the dating scene.

Keeping yourself healthy mentally and emotionally is key to getting through your divorce. This is a difficult time, but you can make it through if you remember these healthy actions.
