What not to post on Facebook during divorce

Facebook is easily accessible through an app on your phone. You may even consider your phone, and Facebook, an extension of you. You post about the good times and the bad times, letting everyone know what is going on in your life at the moment. When you are going through a divorce, however, you may want to think twice before tapping "share."

Posting nasty things about your soon-to-be-ex online can turn out to be a bad decision. The other side can use anything you have posted on social media against you. This is especially important if you are attempting to battle over child custody terms.

Topics to avoid on social media

Not everyone wants to take a break from their social media presence throughout their entire divorce proceedings. However, there are a few subjects to avoid discussing when sharing an inside scoop on your life.

  • Your ex: No one is expecting that you and your soon-to-be ex are having the most amicable divorce possible, but spilling secrets or bad-mouthing them will not help you get a better outcome in your divorce. While you think you might be calling out their bad behavior, your behavior may come into question as well.
  • Your money: It is wise not to post about your finances or any expensive purchases that you have made as of late. If you are attempting to receive financial support from your ex, flaunting finances or expensive acquisitions may not be in your best interest.
  • Your children: Keep the kids off your social media profile. If you are in a custody battle, even the most harmless post could end up being taken the wrong way. You never know what your former spouse or their lawyer could use as evidence against you.

Going through a divorce is challenging. It will benefit you not to post on social media during this time. If you do, however, make sure to avoid the topics listed above.
