Divorce odds among medical professionals

It's no secret that the medical field is difficult, stressful and taxing. It takes a special type of person to dedicate their career to helping others, knowing how hard it can be in their own life. They have to care about health and wellness for the general population, and they have to care about putting their patients ahead of themselves. That's no small feat.

Unfortunately, this selfless attitude can take a toll on their personal lives. They may struggle to feel like they have time for anything else, and this includes a spouse. Many medical professionals wind up getting divorced. Let's take a look at some of the divorce odds for various medical professionals:

  • Dentists: 25.2%
  • Pharmacists: 22.9%
  • Nurses: 33.0%
  • Health care executives: 30.9%

There are many professions with higher divorce rates, but that does not change things for those in health care professions who face divorce. They may still find a strong correlation between the end of the marriage and their chosen career.

Long hours

For some, the reason could come back to the long hours. In many medical professions, someone has to be on the job around the clock. Some, like dentists, can schedule appointments and work a fairly standard day, but not all. Emergency surgeons have to be ready at all hours. Hospital support staff workers have to stay on the job overnight. Medical needs do not stop at 5 p.m.

This can keep people from having what they consider a "normal" life. Their spouse may feel like they never get to spend time together. It may become difficult to take vacations. They may be exhausted when they get home after a 16-hour day and just want to go to bed. All of this can erode a marriage, especially when it lasts for years. It's hard to balance family life and this type of career.

Work-related stress

Similarly, this is just a stressful profession to enter. Doctors and nurses have patients whose lives hang in the balance. Even when their lives are not at stake, their health and wellness may be. One mistake can drastically alter a person's life forever.

This is not the type of career you can completely leave behind at the end of the day. Does that stress make someone treat their family any differently? Does it make it harder for them to relax on their days off? Stress can lead to all manner of issues that can also chip away at the marriage over time.

When it ends

If you work in the medical field or if your spouse does, please understand these divorce odds. Make sure you know what steps to take if and when the marriage ends.
