Why are more older Americans divorcing?

Even as nationwide divorce rates decline, a growing number of Americans over 50 are choosing to end their marriages. The "gray divorce" phenomenon has a number of different causes, but there are also some specific financial concerns when people decide to separate later in life. Researchers note that social attitudes about divorce have shifted dramatically in the United States in recent decades, and today's older Americans are the ones who led that shift. Between 1990 and 2010, the divorce rate for people over 50 doubled, a trend that has continued since.
